Platinum and Palladium Pinning Wire

Our strong and rigid platinum or palladium pinning wire securely holds ceramic cores within the turbine blade during casting, without affecting the structure and integrity of the finished blade.

We make pinning wire to your requirements, including pure platinum (up to 99.998%) and specialised palladium alloys. We also offer Zirconia Grain Stabilised (ZGS) platinum and ZGS 10% rhodium platinum wire. Dispersing zirconia particles into the metal considerably improves the wire's performance by:

  • Slowing down the degradation, therefore extending the operating life
  • Increasing its mechanical strength and durability
  • Dramatically increasing resistance to grain growth, contamination and deformation.

Our wire can be made to your required thickness, with typical diameters of 0.03-25mm. It can be delivered in coils, on a choice of reels, as straight lengths or as cropped pins.

Iridium and Platinum Ignition Products

We have extensive experience in making iridium and platinum components for premium grade aerospace spark plug producers, with our spark plug tips meeting stringent emission standards and demanding engine environments. Iridium is particularly suitable for this demanding application with its high melting point and mechanical strength, and our expertise of working with this difficult material is invaluable.

Precious Metal Wire

Our wire can be made to your required thickness, with typical diameters of:

  • 0.1-4.5mm (0.005-0.177") for rhodium
  • 0.127-4.0mm (0.005-0.157") for iridium
  • 0.03-25mm for all other wire

It can be delivered in coils, on a choice of reels, straight lengths and as cropped pins. Iridium wire is available in continuous lengths or cropped to a minimum of 0.5mm (0.02").

Ultrafine Wire

Our ultrafine alpha platinum wire (0.01-0.025mm diameter) is an exceptional resistance thermometer with its conductivity, high melting point, chemical inertness and extremely stable electrical properties. We can tailor make ingots to specific requirements through batch selection and careful doping.

We tightly control the wire diameter with typical tolerances of ±3%. We supply wire with temperature coefficient of resistance (alpha value) of 0.003800-0.003925, with a tight tolerance up to ±3ppm. Commonly required wires for resistance thermometry include alpha values of:

  • 0.003850 for the industry standard for most sensors outside the USA and Japan. Typical wire diameter is 0.018mm.
  • 0.003900, originally specified for the British Aircraft Industry.
  • 0.003916 for accepted standard in the USA and Japan.
  • Greater than 0.003925 for high precision resistance thermometer detector using very pure platinum wire. Typical wire diameter is 0.07mm.

Thermocouple wire can be supplied as individual wires or one reel with both thermoelements and the hot junction already formed.

Mineral Insulated Metal Sheatheads

Our mineral insulated metal sheatheads are fully assembled thermocouples assemblies that are beneficial in rigorous and harsh conditions. The thermocouple wires are covered by a metal tube filled with compacted magnesium oxide powder to separate the thermoelements, hot junction and metal tube. The assembly offers:

  • Stability with protection from corrosion, oxidation and contamination
  • Rapid response - vital for accurate process control
  • A pressure tight system to withstand high external pressures
  • Resistance to mechanical and thermal shock
  • Resistance to chemical and atmospheric attack
  • Flexibility to be used in hard to reach areas through fully annealed assemblies which can be bent and formed without affecting performance.

We offer a range of end caps for use with mineral insulated metal sheatheads to accommodate different connections to measuring instruments:

  • Type A (supplied as standard) has 75mm insulated and 25mm bare compensating tails. Male or female connectors can also be fitted to the tails. The junction between the thermocouple and compensating cable is hermetically sealed, useful for corrosive or humid environments.
  • Type A2 is similar to type A but with plugs on the junction, allowing rapid changing of the thermocouple without needed to replace the compensating cable.
  • Type B has a stainless steel pot with two 75mm long insulated and 25mm bare thermocouple wire tails, with other lengths available.
  • Type BICC is a screw-in cap similar to type B but with a threaded pot.

Mineral insulated cables without end fitting are supplied with a temporary glass seal to prevent moisture exposure. We can also supply standard, mini, male or female connectors to maintain compatibility with existing installations.
